Debate: Protagonist vs Antagonist

In our story Arachne, it has been hard to decide:  Who is the Protagonist?  Who is the Antagonist?

Based on your knowledge of the story and the definition we learned from Little Red Riding Hood, in the story of Arachne, who is who??? Tell us WHY???

  1. Arachne is the antagonist because she is the main character in the book and the def is the main character in the story. Athena is the protagonist because the def is the person that is not the main character.

Arachne is the antagonist, and Athena is the protagonist. Arachne is the antagonist because she was so great at weaving that she thought so highly of herself so she “challenged” Athena which was a bad idea because Arachne had to pay the price which was Athena turned er into a spider.

  3. I believe that Athene is the antagonist because even though she defeated Arachne, she did come in the story as Arachne’s enemy, and therefore, the antagonist. Arachne…well she isn’t really the protagonist, but she isn’t really the antagonist either. She’s very sassy and antagonist-like, but she’s also seemingly the hero of it all, as she’s the character we open with (not including her father, who is the actual first character we meet). So who’s the protagonist? I’ll go the cloth that Arachne made in her battle against Athene. Think about it. Who (or rather what?) faced off Athene in the final battle? What made the tables turn? The cloth! If Arachne hadn’t woven the cloth like she had, the ending would probably had been different. Wouldn’t it?

  4. I think that Athene is the protagonist because although Arachne did feel that she was the best and better than any god or goddess (Athene), Arachne did get beat and turned into a spider by Athene. Since, Athene “defeated” Arachne that makes Athene the Antagonist because in most stories there is a protagonist and there is a antagonist and the antagonist always tries to defeat the protagonist but, in this situation the protagonist gets defeated by the antagonist. Arachne though, did bring the situation to herself and made Athene do what she did. Imagine if Athene had not turned Arachne into a spider would anyone learn their lesson on being humble about a great talent or would they replace Arachne’s shoes?

  5. I think that Arachne is the protagonist, because a protagonist means that it is the main person in that story or novel such as literary work or drama and Arachne is the main person and the first person that we meet in the story (not including her dad). Also, Arachne is the protagonist because she is the center of the story and she has to be making difficult choices and key decisions, those choices should be making the complication, she has to decide if she should face Athena in a weaving battle or not and if so then it leads to complications. Now, I think Athena is the antagonist, because the author introduced Athena as Arachne’s enemy and she defected Arachne in the weaving competition. Also, the antagonist is usually not the main person and the person that has to compete with the protagonist.

  6. I think that Arachne is the antagonist because the deffintion of antagonist is the main character in the story. The protagonist of the story is Arachne because the definition is the the second main character in the story.

  7. I think that the protagonist in the story Arachne is Arachne because she is the main character and the story mostly indecates her life. I think the antagonist in the story because she is involved in the plot and causes most of the plot. That is who i think the antagonist and protagonist is in the story.

  8. I think that the protagonist in this story is Arachne, because the definition of a protagonist is the main character such as literary work, or drama and Arachne is the main character in this story. I also, think that Arachne is the protagonist, because she is the center of the story and she has to make difficult choices like if she wants to challenge Athena to a weaving battle or not, and she has to make key decisions. The last thing, is that she has to experience consequences of the choices she has made. I think that Athena is the antagonist, because she is the one to turn Arachne into a spider at the end of the weaving challenge that she won. Another way, Athena is the antagonist is that an antagonist is the one to compete with the other one. The last way Athena is the antagonist is that she didn’t have to say yes to the weaving challenge she could of said no and then she wouldn’t have turned Arachne into a spider and she didn’t have to do the weaving challenge.

  9. I think that Arachne is the protagonist because she is the main character in the story even if she is mean the protagonist can be mean it talks a lot about Arachne life in the being they usually talk about the protagonist a lot . Athena is the one who turned Arachne into a spider so I think Athena is the antagonist.

  10. I think that the protagonist is Athena because I think that she was trying to help Arachne become a better person and not be over proud of her work and Arachne was the antagonist because she was very over proud of her work and rude to people when they admired her work. But then I realized the protagonist is the main character so the protagonist is Arachne, and the antagonist is Athena

  11. I think Arachne is the PROtagonist because she is the main character of the story and even though she is not the nicest person she is considered the main character of the story, “Arachne”.

  12. I think Arachne is the protagonist because she is the main character,in the beginning the story is her life and what she does and how she is and how she functions. So since Arachne is the protagonist that makes Athena the antagonist since she is in the conflict and important to the story . But Athena is not the main character so she is not the protagonist, Athena is the one who makes the conflict. At the end when the weaving contest is over, Arachne has to learn her lesson.

  13. I think that Arachne is the protagonist because she is the main character in the myth. And Athens is the antagonist because she kept getting in the way of Arachne.

  14. i think Athena was the protagonist because Arachne was being rude to a god and said Athena was not even able to be compared to her at weaving and then was rude to a woman who gave her a warning, Arachne of course did not respond well to the warning and challenged Athena to a weave of and all Athena did was accept but then when Athena won and Arachne went mad .Athena turned her into a spider which was pretty harsh but arachne has been like this for a while and needed a lesson on being humble

  15. i think Athena was the protagonist because Arachne was being rude to a god and said Athena was not even able to be compared to her at weaving and then was rude to a woman who gave her a warning, Arachne of course did not respond well to the warning and challenged Athena to a weave of and all Athena did was accept but then when Athena won and Arachne went mad .Athena turned her into a spider which was pretty harsh but arachne has been like this for a while and needed a lesson on being humble

  16. I think that Arachne is the protagonist, because the definition of a protagonist is the main character in that story which Arachne is. Also, Arachne is the protagonist, because the character has to make decisions or key ideas of the problem. The last way Arachne is the protagonist is that she had to make a choice if she wanted to compete in a weaving battle against Athena. Now I think Athena is the antagonist, because the definition of an antagonist is that they have to compete against the protagonist. Another way Athena is the antagonist is that she could of said no to the weaving battle and she wouldn’t have to be the antagonist. The last way Athena is the antagonist is that she turned Arachne into a spider after she won the weaving battle against Arachne.

  17. I think that Arachne is the protagonist, because she is the main character in the story and the story is about her. I think the antagonist is Athena, becasue she is involed in the story and the plot. Also Athena turned Arachne into a spider after the weaving contest. This who I think is the antagonist and protagonist.

  18. i think that arachne is the protagonist because she is the main character and the story is about her. even though she is mean she is still the protagonist because it doesn’t matter whether or not she is mean or not. As said in class “it is a point of view”. its a point of view because to some people they might think that arachne is nice and doing the right but other people might think that Athena is right by what she is doing. i think that Athena is right because Athena is bringing conflict among Arachne and changes her into a spider, even though Arachne deserved it it still makes Athena the antagonist. i think that how i have explained it and my explanation well fits the definition of both protagonist and antagonist.

  19. I think that Arachne is the protagonist because she is the main character in the story. Even though she does have her not so good times she is still the main character making her the protagonist. Athene is the antagonist because she competed against Arachne making her the protagonists enemy.

  20. so I think Arachne is the protagonist because the definition of protagonist is “the leading characters or major parts in a drama, movie, novel, or other fictional text” just because Arachne is not the nicest person doesn’t make her the antagonist because the definition of antagonist is “the person who gets in the way of the protagonist” and Arachne doesn’t get in Athena’s way. But now on Athena she is the antagonist because she gets in Arachne’s way of winning the weaving war and so that makes her the antagonist.

  21. I believe that Arachne is the protagonist and Athena is the antagonist. It was a very hard decision considering the fact that Arachne is just plan bossy and crazy for challenging a god. After sitting down and really thinking about it, I came to a conclusion that Arachne is the protagonist because she is the main character and the story line revolves around her. Also Arachne is the protagonist because the character has to make decisions or key ideas to help solve the problem. Which means that Athena is the antagonist because there was conflict between her and Arachne. Also, Athena is the antagonist because she turns Arachne into a spider after the weaving competition.

  22. 814
I think that Arachne is the antagonist because she is hostile to everyone. She thinks she is better than the Goddess of weaving Athena. Every time someone watched here she got really angry. She thought she was better than everyone when it came to weaving.Through out the whole book Arachne was rude. That’s why I think Arachne is the antagonist.

  23. Athena was a very good weaver on her loom but when someone is talking about her while she is working, she gets on the angry side. she is the Protagonist because she is the main character of the story and it talks about her. i think Arcane is the Antagonist because she tries to help Athena but Athena doesn’t listen what Arachene says so, she punished Athena. that’s what i think about Athena and Arachene.

  24. i think that antagonist is Athena and the protagonist is Arachne because Athena turns arachne into a spider by punishing her and arachne is the the protagonist because she is just a little girl but was just saying her skill was as good as a goddess

  25. i think that Athena is the antagonist because she turned Arachne into a spider. although she deserved it, Arachne was mad because everyone started to watch her and not do there jobs. In spite of being angry she called out Athena to a weave off even tho she didn’t mean it.

  26. paris 213 i think that the antagonist is Athena, and that the protagonist is Arachne. The reason why i think that the protagonist is Arachne because the protagonist is always the main character no matter how good or bad the person is. The reason why i thought that Athena is the protagonist is because no matter how good or bad that person if your in conflict with the main character you are the antagonist . Also in the story Athena turns Arachne into a spider because Athena has conflict with the main character Arachne.

  27. I think that the antagonist is Athena and the protagonist is Arachne because Athena turns Arachne into a spider for revenge and the reason Arachne is the protagonist becasue she she may be young but she shows she can be a great goddess.

  28. I think that Athena is the protagonist. I think that because Athena is the one who really teaches the lesson. I also think that because Arachne is the one who challenged Athena. Also Athena is a godess .

  29. I think that the Antagonist is Athena because She turned arachne into a spider. Althogh she desiverd it I think it could have been handle diffrently. But she shouldent have challenged the goddess Athena.

  30. I think that Athena is the protagonist because she is the one who really helps us find the theme of the story and teaches the lesson.I think that Arachne is the antagonist because she is very arrogant and a little bit rude.

  31. I think Arachne was the protagonist because she is the leading or main character, so then Athena would be the antagonist.

  32. I think Athena is the protagonist because she is the main character in the story and she was minding her own business when Arachne, the antagonist/rival, challenged her to a weave off . Arachne thought that she was better than a goddess and thought she knew everything so Athena turned her into a spider.

  33. I think Athena is the Protagonist because She did nothing to harm Arachne (Except for her Punishment which she was turned into a spider) and She is the Main Character. Arachne, on the other hand deserves to be the Antagonist of the story because she is the challenger of the weave-off, when Athena was doing nothing in her own time, and also, Arachne deserves to be the Antagonist because she was bragging on how good her weaving skills were.

  34. I think that Arachne is the protagonist in the story because the protagonist doesn’t necessarily have to be the good guy. The protagonist is the main character in the story, and that Athene is the antagonist of the story.

  35. I think that Athena was the protagonist because she was a goddess and tried to be nice to Aracnhe we she was too cocky and mad and everyone because she did not get the respect she wanted for he weaving.

  36. I think that Aracnhe is the protagonist because the definition says its the main character and Athene is the antagonist because of the def.
